Years As BandDirector

Montebello High School 1968-1973

I spent 20 years as a band director. Here are some pictures of some of the highlights of that time. Many of the students seen here have gone on to have music careers of their own. I have three of my students currently teaching in our district. Leonard Narumi is band director at Schurr High school. Larry Covellone, band director for 20 years now, at Montebello High school. Both followed me when I left those respective schools. Both are well respected in the Southern California musical community and I am very proud of both of them. Bill Loose, left the district a couple of years ago. He was music coordinator or the district and now currently the Superintendent of Personnel at South Pasadena School District.

Cerritos Jazz Festival, 1968 The "Esquires" jazz ensemble, which was really hot, won 1st place at the festival that year. At that time, not many jazz ensembles were in Southern California schools. Montebello had a past history, started by Mr. Herb Roesner and continued in that tradition by Mr. Fred Johnson.

The Mighty Oiler Band spelling out the script "M". We used to do a NEW field show every home game. We did field formations. Formations like "Bullwinkle", Sombreros, letters, etc. Our scripts were a very important aspect of the show. We tried to keep the script and formations fun and nice to look at. Special effects such as fire extinguishers and fireworks were always ued. I wrote the music for every half-time show from "Taco Mambo" to Elton John tunes. Yeah, he's been around for a long time!!
