I student taught at Schurr Junior High in 1964 under Mr. Charles Piper. In 1973 I transferred to Schurr from Montebello High. Schurr was a high school for 3 year when I came. The band had a rough time getting started with 2 band directors in 3 yrs. I was the third and I stayed for 13 years. The band room was 3 yrs old. The old band room was now the choir room. The band director at Schurr now is Mr. Leonard Narumi, who was a student of mine the first year I taught there. He was my wife's student in the 4th grade.
The Schurr High School Band as it appeared in 1978 at the Montclair Band Review. That year, we won Sweepstakes with 49 members of the band. I wouldn't march anyone unless they memorized the march and could play it in their sleep.Click picture.
The Band in 1982.I thought that this was one of the better bands that I had during my career at Schurr. Although, all of them had a cerain personality and sound of their own, I think this one had the best over facility and sound.

Band Boosters are an essential part of any successful band. Mrs. Foster, seen here was one of the best. She had 2 daughters go through the program. Her husband was also very helpful and gave us great support. I only had one year during my 20 years as a band director, that the "tail tried to wag the dog", if you know what I mean.
Support is great from your students! Band Secretary Nina Miyaji (left), President-Tina Vartanian (right), Band managers are below. By the way, Tina Vartanian became a band director in Southern California. The Managers were always an asset to me. The would set up ladders at the half-time shows, help at parades. They were in constant communication with me. Each had walkie-talkies so we could survey a wide area along the parade route.
