Manual Arts High School

Stuart Stengel
(1916-1999)

Stengel, Stuart, passed away March 21, 1999, at age 82. Stuart Stengel will be remembered as a dedicated and inspiring educator for the Los Angeles Unified School District for 25 years from the time he served as teacher and Vice-Principal at Manual Arts High School, until his appointment in 1988 to the office of Associate Superintendent in charge of all secondary school in the L.A. area where he was recognized as an accomplished leader. His guidance and wise counsel, along with his good spirit, were greeted with enthusiasm wherever he was assigned. His dedicated efforts in each community he served were a source for pride to parents, students, and his school associates.

Some will remember him as the Principal of Huntington Park High School in the early 6O's. Some will recall his years as Assistant Superintendent in Area B, when the system was decentralized. Throughout his whole career, his challenge to students was to strive for their very best and to learn to learn the value of teamwork.

In one of his memorable speeches, he remarked that, "Man's greatest discovery has been - not the wheel, not the auto, or atomic energy - It has been teamwork by agreement. The missions of education has been to make clear that free men, working together, offer a better base for solving problems than any other line of action."

In 1970, Stuarts service was tragically cut short by the onset of Parkinson's Disease. He was 58 years old and bore this affliction for 27 years.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years. Together they shared a life centered on the arts and humanities. Following in the Stengel tradition, two daughters and three granddaughters are teachers also. In addition to his wife Connie Stengel, Stuart is survived by 3 daughters, Karen Koch, Heidi Lemon-Justice and Gretchen Schnitzer; 3 granddaughters Rebecca Lemon, Kristin Lemon and Claudia Koch; and 2 grandsons, Mati Koch and Issac Schnitzer.

In his memory, contributions may be made to the American Parkison's Disease Association, San Diego Chapter, 4901 Morena Blvd., Ste. 104, San Diego, CA. 92117-3424.
